Using Private DNS helps encrypt and secure your internet activity. It can block ads, trackers, and protect against DNS-based attacks. Here’s how to set it up on both iPhone and Android:
🔐 iPhone (iOS 14 and newer)
Apple doesn’t support system-wide DNS settings directly like Android does, but you can still use Private DNS with these methods:
Option 1: Use a DNS Profile
- Visit a trusted DNS provider’s website (e.g. NextDNS, Cloudflare).
- Sign up and create a custom DNS configuration.
- Download the iOS configuration profile from their site.
- Go to:
- Settings > General > VPN & Device Management
- Tap the downloaded profile and follow instructions to install it.
- Restart your phone to apply changes.
Option 2: Use a DNS App
Apps like:
- 1.1.1.1 by Cloudflare
- NextDNS
let you set and manage Private DNS via a VPN-like tunnel.
🤖 Android (9 and newer)
Android 9+ supports native Private DNS.
Steps:
- Go to Settings
- Tap Network & Internet (or Connections on some phones)
- Select Private DNS
- Choose:
- Private DNS provider hostname
- Enter a hostname (e.g. dns.google, dns.quad9.net, or dns.nextdns.io)
- Tap Save
✅ Example hostnames:
- Cloudflare: one.one.one.one
- Google DNS: dns.google
- Quad9: dns.quad9.net
- NextDNS (from your account): xxxxxx.dns.nextdns.io
✅ Benefits of Private DNS
- Encrypts your DNS queries
- Bypasses ISP DNS (for privacy)
- Reduces ad tracking
- Can block malicious domains (if supported by provider)
